Post-Keratin Treatment
Basic at home care for the 3 days after your keratin, and beyond..
Congratulations on your new keratin treatment! This is an exciting step towards achieving beautifully smooth, shiny hair. However, the first three days following your treatment are crucial for ensuring the best results and longevity. Here’s how to take care of your hair during this time, along with tips on caring for your keratin treatment beyond the initial days:
1. Keep Your Hair Down
For the first three days, it’s essential to keep your hair down and refrain from tying it back or using clips. If you need to pull your hair back for a short period, try to do so briefly. Prolonged tension can create dents and disrupt the treatment’s results.
2. Dealing with Kinks
If you notice any kinks or waves developing in your hair, you can lightly iron them out. Using a flat iron at home can help smooth out any imperfections, but be sure to keep the temperature below 380°F. This will help maintain the integrity of the keratin while leaving your hair straight and sleek.
3. Daily Flat Ironing for Extra Straightness
If you’re looking for that ultra-straight look, feel free to flat iron your hair once a day, preferably in the morning. Just remember to keep the heat setting below 380°F to protect your hair.
4. Avoid Sweating
Try to avoid getting too sweaty during these first few days. Light workouts are okay, but if you do start to sweat, be sure to lightly blow-dry your hair immediately after, followed by a gentle flat iron to smooth any kinks that may have developed.
5. Stay Away from Water
For the best results, keep your hair dry! When shampooing, use a shower cap if you have one. You can also loosely put your hair up while washing to avoid getting it wet.
6. Avoid High Humidity
Stay away from environments with high humidity or any situations where your hair may get wet. This will help maintain the smoothness and sleekness achieved from your keratin treatment.
7. Dealing with Oily Hair on Day 3
By the third day, your hair may feel a bit oily. Wearing a hat can be a great way to hide this, but make sure it’s not too tight—avoid creating lines or indentations in your hair. Limit the time you wear the hat to prevent marks on the hair. Power through this day! I always recommend planning ahead, schedule your service at a time when you can commit to the 3 days and just know the 3rd day will be the hardest!
8. Washing Your Hair Sooner
If you find that you need to wash your hair out sooner than the recommended three days, be aware that this could impact the results and longevity of your treatment. If you must, be sure to use your sulfate-free products.
9. Using Sulfate-Free Shampoo
After the initial three days, continue to use sulfate-free shampoo to maintain the health of your hair and protect your keratin treatment. Sulfates can strip away the essential keratin and oils, reducing the longevity and effectiveness of your treatment.
10. Caring for Your Keratin Treatment Beyond the First 3 Days
Once the initial three days are over, your keratin treatment can last up to five months! To maintain and even enhance the results, consider getting touch-ups or additional treatments periodically. Keratin treatments often yield cumulative results, meaning that with each subsequent treatment, your hair can become smoother and healthier. Additionally, using keratin-infused products can further prolong the results and improve the quality of your hair. If you're interested, I’d be happy to suggest some of my favorite products!
By following these tips during the critical first three days and beyond, you’ll set yourself up for long-lasting, beautiful results. Enjoy your smooth, shiny hair!
